Don’t need all of your frequent flyer miles?
Donate them to a Postdoctoral student!
The Capita Foundation is partnering with the Gordon Research Conferences to facilitate the travel of Postdocs currently engaged in auditory research.
The Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) is a non-profit organization managed by and for the benefit of the scientific community. The (GRC) provides an international forum for the presentation and discussion of frontier research in the biological, chemical, and physical sciences, and their related technologies. The GRC is committed to bringing young scientists together to discuss their current research and build informal networks with their peers that may lead to a lifetime of collaboration and scientific achievement.
Research laboratories are experiencing severe restrictions in travel funding.
It is unlikely that postdoctoral students - scientists who are still in training –
will be able to attend a conference if they have to depend on a lab for funding.
Your donation of un-needed or unwanted airline miles will make the difference.
The Capita Foundation will post here a list of Postdocs in need of support in February, 2010. If you would like to donate miles sooner, please call (619) 600-1407 or email nicole@capitafoundation.org
FAQ
How do I donate/transfer my unwanted/un-needed airline miles to a postdoctoral student through this program?
For the sake of privacy, we prefer that you make the transfer directly with the intended recipient. We will put you in touch with the intended recipient, who will provide you with their airline miles program account number. You can transfer miles online or by phone without sharing your airline mile program account number with anyone.
How many miles will a postdoctoral student need to travel to the GRC Auditory System Conference?
Most tickets will take at least 35,000 miles, probably 50,000 miles to get flights for the right days/times.
How is it decided which postdocs will travel to the Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) Auditory System Conference?
Students and postdocs from any university are invited to apply to attend the meeting. The Chairperson of the GRC decides who to accept based on a short description of their work. The GRC strives to have diverse representation from many institutes and geographical regions, as well as stage of career. The GRC has encouraged postdocs selected to attend the Gordon Research Auditory System Conference with financial need to apply for the Capita Foundation/GRC airline mile donation program.
How will I know if the scientist actually used the miles for the conference?
We require that all airline mile recipients submit a copy of their itinerary within a month of their travel.
What happens if a postdoctoral student accumulates airline miles but doesn’t use them?
We have stipulated that if airline mile recipients do not submit a copy of their itinerary before December 31, 2010 they must return the miles to the individual who donated them.
How will my donation be recognized?
All airline mile donors will receive a thank you letter from the Capita Foundation, and recognition on our website. We will encourage airline mile recipients to follow-up with donors concerning highlights of their participation at the conference.
I want to donate miles, but I simply don’t have the time to contact my intended recipient and process the transfer of miles.
No problem – we’re happy to facilitate.
